Let Us Introduce Ourselves
I have lived in Crystal Lake almost all my life, graduating from Crystal Lake Central High School in 1977. In 1979, I began working at the Crystal Lake Health Food Store and immediately took a strong interest in nutrition. Learning under Bob Edwards, the founder, I read as much as I could and eventually became store manager. After many years of experience, working with our great customers and staff, I completed a degree of certified nutritionist in 2001. I truly enjoy what I do here at the store and wouldn’t trade it for anything! I live with my wife, Sue, in Crystal Lake and together we enjoy whitewater canoeing and skiing. I also am a jazz pianist and saxophonist and am the house pianist with Woodstock’s jazzonthesquare.com.
I believe that every health concern has a physical, emotional, and spiritual solution, so I approach each customer as body, mind, and spirit. I enjoy working at Crystal Lake Health Foods because each day is a new learning experience. We are like family here. We care about each other, and we care about our customers like our extended family. I am a poet and enjoy reading my poetry aloud at various venues. I have been a member of A Poetry Project since 1998. I have been published in After Hours, BAC Street Journal, Point of View, Apocalypse, and Tucumcari Literary Review. I enjoy spending my weekends learning how to dance.
It is an immense understatement to say that my time spent at Crystal Lake Health Foods has transformed who I am and what I believe. The education I have received here, along with the people I have gotten to know and come to deeply care for, have helped to shape my way of life and my goals for the future. I have spent fifteen years working at this store, and during those years, I earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Carthage College and a master’s degree in anthropology from Northern Illinois University. I am currently pursuing a second master’s degree in public health, as well. Over the last few years, I was hired as the education coordinator at the Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum, was married, and purchased a lovely old home, so much of my free time is spent updating our house and enjoying this new phase in life!
I consider myself a “work in progress” at Crystal Lake Health Foods. I have always been interested in natural alternatives, and I enjoy working with such educated people, who are now my friends. My time here has taught my family and me how to lead a healthier lifestyle.
I really enjoy learning that what goes on our skin, what we clean our homes with, and what we ingest directly affects our overall health. Being a wife, mom, and now grandmother makes it even more important to educate myself on a healthier lifestyle.
My passion for and studies in complementary medicine and nutrition began about 30 years ago, and in 2003, I was given the opportunity to work with the awesome staff at Crystal Lake Health Foods. At the same time, I was finishing up my Masters of Science in traditional Chinese medicine and Western herbalism. Although I am an herbalist, I feel that nutrition and physical exercise is every bit as important in maintaining a healthy body or helping the body get back to a state of homeostasis. With this in mind, I went back to school to become a certified integrative health coach and professional cancer coach. It is a pleasure working with people that are so passionate about helping others. Together with the wonderful customers that I have met over the years, it makes Crystal Lake Health Foods a great place to work!
Katie O’Shaughnessy began working at the Crystal Lake Health Food Store in 2008, drawn to the store by its hometown atmosphere. She has since become interested and knowledgeable in alternative health, and now uses what nature offers to cure what’s ailin’ her. Katie also works at Evoke Productions and is writing a novel during her free time. She loves to read, drink coffee, and eat stuff. All stuff.
I began working at Crystal Lake Health Foods in 2008 while dealing with some of my own health issues. Having grown up with a mother of similar ideals, I had always had an awareness of holistic healing but never a true appreciation until CLHFS came into my life. I am proud to say that these people—both staff and customers alike —have changed my life. My coworkers truly are my best friends. My role here is something of a hodge-podge, between learning the products, writing the newsletter, keeping up on orders, and getting my feet wet in everything we have to offer. Outside of work, you will find me sewing in my studio, writing, sitting at Starbucks, doing yoga, or taking aimless drives with the speakers turned up. I also enjoy diagrams.
